The Diagnosis
Back in the day, you may have sat across from your manager in a glass-walled meeting room. They’d nod with manufactured gravity, speaking in hushed, authoritative tones, as if handing down sacred scripture. These days, it’s a cut and paste email. Perhaps your Enterprise Award agreement has built in a pay rise each year for the next three years. Same same.
“The board has recognised your strong performance this year. We’ve secured an above-market increase for you. A three grand bump.”
You smile, nod, and mutter something to yourself about how good this is. You feel validated. You worked hard. You took on that extra project when Bob went on stress leave. You stayed late. You earned this.
Except, when your next payslip lands in your account, the math reveals the cruel joke.
A $3,000 gross annual raise on an example $100,000 per annum salary works out to roughly $57 gross extra per week. Once Sir ATO smacks your shiny pay rise across the face with 32% tax (including the Medicare Levy), that number shrinks to around $39 per week. Factor in real-world inflation, the genuine cost of insurance, fresh produce, fuel, rent, council rate etc, and your actual purchasing power hasn't just flatlined, it has gone backward. Try these numbers with a bigger salary like $200,000 per annum, and your after tax pay rise is $61 per week. You can slice and dice this however you want, and the outcome is still the sad outcome.
You didn't get a raise. You got a tokenistic pat on the head in exchange for absorbing 20% more operational chaos, fielding emails or calls on your mobile during dinner, and shouldering a heavier mental load. You traded your scarce life energy for zero net financial progress in the real world.
The corporate machine relies on this psychological sleight of hand. inflating your ego with nominal numbers while quietly devaluing your actual time.
The Agency Move
Treat Nominal Raises as Phantom Cash: The moment a standard pay increase hits your inbox, mentally quarantine it. Do not let it leak into your lifestyle inflation, your grocery basket, or your weekend dinners.
Automate the Diversion: Set up an automatic bank transfer that sweeps 100% of your net pay increase directly into something I call your “Freedom Bucket”, whether that’s a broad-market index ETF, managed funds, superannuation, or paying down debt, before it ever sits in your everyday bank account to tempt you. If you never see it land, you never miss it.
Cease Over-Delivering for Marginal Ratings: Stop burning your evenings trying to claw your way from a "Meets Expectations" to an "Exceeds Expectations" review. The financial delta between those two ratings is usually a rounding error. Perform at the exact standard required to protect your income, and redirect your surplus energy toward building assets you actually own.
Do The Bare Minimum: No, your Employer doesn’t love you. They pay you just enough so you don’t leave, so you should work just enough not to get sacked. I’m not saying cut corners. I’m saying do the tasks that are handed to you, nothing more, nothing less.
